A Miscommunication

Gerrod grew distant as Celeste continued on. The more she explained, the more he retreated to a place where she could no longer reach him. She was giving him information that his heart misinterpreted. He didn’t hear that she was struggling; he heard that she had already decided. She sensed that she was losing him and motioned for his embrace. His body stiffened at her touch. His ego now stood between them and erected walls in defense of his perceived rejection. Everything in her wanted start over, say it differently, make him understand. Pride stopped her because the cold look in his eyes told her that his warmth was no longer available. With more thought, she could have chosen better words. Instead, she miscommunicated her true intent. She couldn't unsay those words. He couldn't unhear them. It was an error that could not be corrected. The damage was done. She could not unbreak his heart.
