Brother to the Night

From his backseat window, Chauncey looked out at his city. When he was young, he and his brothers used to ride their bikes along the tree-lined avenues of the wealthy neighborhoods on the west side of town. They marveled at the grandiose estates pushed back from the shaded sidewalks; each as unique as the next, unlike the indistinct track homes of his public housing community. These escapades allowed them to see how people with money lived. They wanted to have heaven on earth too. They all wanted money. Chauncey was the only one willing to work for it.
