A Day in the Sun

At perfectly timed intervals, waves of fresh sea water raced towards the beach, each time reaching further and further inland. Kendrick and Naomi claimed their spots for the day underneath the two umbrellas closest to the shoreline. Naomi wanted a clear view of the ocean and the children as they gathered buckets of wet sand to build their castle. Though early, people filled the beachfront with music and laughter as they prepared to soak up the sun and white sand along the pristine coast with the clearest water this side of the equator. After spreading towels on each of the chairs, Kendrick inhaled the fresh sea air as he joined the children already in the midst of sculpting the foundation. With Kendrick now on father duty, Naomi let down the back of her seat and gazed at the cloudless sky above. In this moment she felt as high as the seagulls flying away in the distance.
